My friend, Mary, a fellow music teacher, said something to me recently that really stuck with me: (I’m paraphrasing... it was a few weeks ago...or maybe a few months?? Thanks, pandemic lol!) I see myself as a helper, and the way I help people is through music. I LOVE THAT. This is how I see myself and was never able to put it so clearly and succinctly. I love singing and teaching voice, but really, I don’t care what your voice sounds like. Yes, I will help you find a stronger, freer voice that you love. AND, what I care about the most is making you feel welcome as you are, and helping you find something in yourself you didn’t know was possible. When students can finally do [insert any goal here] then the light bulb turns on: If I can do [this goal], then what else can I do that I didn’t realize?? This is how I help people through music: by helping them realize that they’re capable of so much more than they realized; by helping them feel accepted wherever they are on their vocal and life's journey. Society tells us we’re not enough. Not successful enough. Not rich enough. Not pretty enough. Or, we’re too much. Too fat. Too loud. Too WHATEVER. Screw that ish. We. Are. Enough. YOU. Are. Enough. And, you are welcome here. Let's change the world, y'all.
